Dieudonné Amisi Mutambala
HDL - Designing Strategies and Projects for Humanitarian Action Student
Dieudonné Amisi Mutambala is a CERAH student of our new Distance Learning Certificate of Advanced Studies: Designing Strategies and Projects in Humanitarian Action. He is currently in Kampala, Uganda in a unique residential session at the Médecins Sans Frontières training centre where he is meeting the other students for the first time and the course coordinators Dr Edith Favoreu and Sandrine Delattre. What is your professional background?
I am a teacher by educational background, but for the last 15 years I have been working within my DRC-based organization called Artists for Humanity (ArtHum) and for International organizations, mainly in three areas of intervention: Education, Human Rights and Peace-building (Conflict Transformation).
Why did you decide to work in humanitarian action and what is your current occupation?
My country of origin, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), has been experiencing successive periods of tensions - with all their realities regarding oppression, exactions, looting, destruction, forced displacements & disappearing and killings - especially in eastern provinces of the country where I am originally from. I found it necessary to move out from Kinshasa the capital town of DRC and initiate something as a contribution for the enhancement of the situation.
Working in emergency situations since 1999, I have been involved in the implementation of diverse humanitarian assistance projects. I have also been working in other domains which are in interconnection with substantial humanitarian interventions. I am currently in a work position of Assistant to Program Director within “Initiatives of Change – Great Lakes Region of Africa” (I&C-GLA).
How is your participation in this course important for your organisation?
My participation in the course is important for both I&C-GLA and ArtHum. It is also relevant for my personal professional progress as well.
How can you already foresee how to integrate what you learn in your own reality?
The completion of this CAS training course will be a turning point in my career. First of all, it will open other windows of opportunity which may allow me to pursue my university studies through the University of Geneva and CERAH. Secondly, this course is technically providing new skills and it will actually foster my work competence and performance.
What impact can it have on your organisation, your team and projects?
I look at this course as a trigger for change in my organization, as well as for my team efficiency and for the effectiveness of our future projects.
Any highlights you want to share from Kampala? How does it feel to finally "meet" the other students?
Meeting with other students was emotional to me. From the beginning of the course in August 2014, everyone was working together but without really knowing each other. We had regular opportunities to exchange on our assignments, to discuss our views and experiences but meeting each other now brings another dimension. I am experiencing a “warm climate” between participants. I notice that the students benefit from concrete and direct assistance from the facilitators. I also realize that the students of this CAS and the training team are becoming familiar. They are exchanging and knowing each other better. This gives me a feeling of belonging to a new friendly family that cares about my concerns.
